Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. Whenever it says "surgery" just substitute "chemotherapy" and you're good to go! And as it turns out, I had to have a minor surgery to install a port for chemo, so it worked for that, too. My pre-surgery blood pressure was way lower than it is during normal visits. I've got 7 more rounds of chemo to go, but the first one I sailed through like a champ with minimal side effects and my doc is good at managing chemo side effects, even so, he says I did much better than most of his other patients.
I know each round is supposed to be tougher, so I'm glad it started on such a positive note. An example of my attitude after reading this book: whenever I looked at the chemo bag hanging from my IV pole, I would think, "This medicine is going to help me get better. I am so thankful they have this medicine! So even if I am given a terminal diagnosis and here's a headline: "All life will end at some time or another" I hope I can live it relaxed and open and positive than scared, tense, and frightened.
I still have bad days about having to do all this, but that's normal. This book was very helpful.
I also used her meditation. Format: Paperback Verified Purchase. The data in the book is interesting. But the CD that came with it has a guided relaxation session that I really love! CD also has an interview or 2? I used it before double mastectomy and it really helped me shift my fears away from "mutilating surgery" over to "healing surgery" mindset. I continue to use the guided relaxation CD when I really need to lower stress!
Thus book, referred by a friend, before my cardiac procedure this year, was completely helpful in my personal preparations.
Body & Soul with Gail Harris
I shared meditations with family and friends in gatherings at my home, insisted on speaking days ahead of time with the anesthesia office, and handed the young anesthetist a five sentence list of affirmations to say when and if he could while I was under. One was this: "Your heart is so beautiful and strong, and doing so well. My daughter filmed me as I awoke and my first words with a smile were "I'm so happy.
I love you. Always believe in the power of mind and spirit to rally for us when we are at our most vulnerable. If you or someone you care about is going to have a major surgery, just buy this, read it, and follow it. The doctor's were all astounded at how well my wife recovered from major abdominal surgery and while this book wasn't the only reason, we think it helped a lot. We didn't bother with playing the tapes during the surgery as headphones would have interfered too much, but the doctors were happy to participate with their part in the book's instructions which I was frankly astounded at here in rural NC and reading it beforehand was quite beneficial.
A good, worthwhile, and practical book. Although I have had surgeries in the past, they were not as extensive as the one that was coming up. I listened to the relaxation CD every day for the week before my surgery. As the book recommended, I asked my family and friends to send prayers and positive thoughts and energy to me a half hour before my surgery. I have to say that the CD really relaxed me, and after listening to it I was able to use some of the techniques to relax myself and take away the anxiety of the hospital stay and accompanying sometimes invasive procedures.
I am happy to report that my surgery went very well and my recovery has been encouraging. I did not need to use very much pain medication either in the hospital or at home, and at this point 2 weeks out I do not need any pain medication at all. Maybe it is a coincidence, but my experience with my surgery after reading this book and listening to the CD was very positive. I plan to loan it to any of my family or friends who may need surgery in the future.
I recently had surgery and this book was recommended to me prior to the procedure. I ordered it immediately and I'm so glad I did!
Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster : A Guide of Mind-Body Techniques
It helped me to stay focused and calm in the time leading up to the surgery. I've had many surgeries over the years and I have never felt so at peace. Even in pre-op I was able to remain completely calm. I actually fell asleep which has never happened to me in pre-op!
Usually I'm very nervous and filled with anxiety but instead I was grounded, calm and filled with gratitude which I am convinced had a positive affect on the outcome of my surgery and healing process. I highly recommend this book! See all reviews.
